Students intending to participate in the Honors Research Program will speak with research faculty in their major area. The placement of a student in the Honors Research Program is subject to the approval and availability of a faculty advi0osor. The student applies for acceptance in the Honors Research Program by the end of their junior year (~80 credits or ~24 Units).
Students must agree to a minimum 2-semester commitment to conduct research under the supervision of their faculty research advisor and will register in each semester for 1 credit of Independent Study: “TAS Honors Research” Total: 2 credits/year*. The student will write a preliminary research paper on the proposed research that has been agreed upon with their faculty advisor, and this document is to be submitted to the faculty advisor for approval. Near the end of the project, the student will write a final research paper on the outcomes which includes the following required elements: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and References. The faculty advisor will submit the manuscript to the Convening Group for approval. The student will be prepare a poster to be presented at an on-campus undergraduate research symposium or at an external symposium to be approved by the convening group.
The student is also required to make an oral presentation on their research project at either an on-campus undergraduate research symposium or at an external symposium to be approved by the Convening Group. In the event that it is not possible for the student to make an oral presentation at an approved symposium, or if the convening group prefers, the student will make an oral presentation on their research project before their Convening Group. Students fulfilling all the requirements will, upon recommendation of the Convening Group and approval by the Dean of The School of Theoretical and Applied Science, receive a certificate signifying successful completion of the Honors Research Program. In addition, all students completing the Honors Research Program will be nominated by their faculty advisor and inducted as Associate Members in Sigma Xi.
*Students choosing to undertake 4-semesters of research will apply for acceptance in the Honors Research Program at the end of their sophomore year and will receive a total of 4 credits/2 years, and are qualified to receive the designation: Honors Research with Distinction
